New hospital at Barts

Barts and The London is currently undergoing the largest and most complex hospital redevelopment project in the country - and this is supported by a donation from Barts and The London Charity to fund state-of-the-art equipment.

Phase 1 of the new Barts Cancer Centre is now complete and the first patients took occupancy of the spacious, light-filled wards on 17 March 2010. Phase 2 of the new build is about to begin which, coupled with refurbishments of Barts’ historic buildings will create a Cardiac Centre of Excellence to sit alongside the Cancer Centre from 2014.

This will give Barts the capacity to respond flexibly to advances in modern healthcare, and transform the hospital experience for millions of patients from London and beyond.

In 2003, Barts and The Royal London Board appointed the consortium of Skanska, Innisfree and John Laing (known collectively as Capital Hospitals), to deliver a new hospital scheme fit for the 21st century. Since then progress has been dramatic.

  • Phase 1 saw the delivery of the first half of the new hospital at Barts in March 2010.
  • Phase 2 will be delivered in September 2014, with completion of the second half of the new hospital.
  • Phase 3 will be delivered in November 2015 with a new energy centre, car park and the refurbishment of Barts Square as a pedestrian area.
  • February 2016 will mark final completion for Barts Hospital.

Donors will know exactly where and how their money is spent, choosing from a wish list that includes the latest imaging and radiotherapy equipment. The benefits to the patient will be significant.

One of the first departments to receive new equipment is radiotherapy. Four new linear accelerators (linacs) have been purchased to deliver the latest techniques, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). With IMRT, radiation doses can be targeted at the tumour, and minimised around critical anatomical structures, resulting in a more effective treatment than conventional radiotherapy.

The equipment in the new radiotherapy department offers the most advanced radiotherapy techniques available anywhere in the NHS and will allow the hospital to treat 20% more patients.

A spokesperson for Barts and The London Charity said: "This ambitious and unprecedented programme of development will help to transform the landscape of modern medicine and propel Barts and The London into the 21st century. This means that those who support Barts and The London Charity can make a real and tangible contribution to the innovation of modern healthcare."
