What is Cystic Fibrosis and the Vest?

Cystic Fibrosis is a common lethal inherited disease. Patients are unable to control water and salt diffusion in the lungs, resulting in the formation of sticky mucous, chest infections and ultimately lung damage. CF condition affects both lungs and digestive system. There is no cure for this disease, and the average life expectancy is 32-34 years.

To assist with keeping their lungs as clear as possible, patients have to have regular physiotherapy sessions 2-5 times a day which can involve breathing exercises, chest physiotherapy including of manual techniques, use of breathing devices and exercise. This can take between 30 to 60 minutes for each session – often an exhausting and time consuming regime for both the patients and their family.

These special vests have dramatically changed the life of CF patients as they are an alternative means of airway clearance and work by providing vibrations to the chest wall, assisting with moving the mucous within the airways. It can be used every day at home and gives a greater level of independence and often dramatically improving the quality of life for both patients and their families.
