Fighting back against Motor Neurone Disease

27 May 2011

A dedicated team of 15 triathletes from CVC Capital Partners will be taking to the fields and lakes of Blenheim Palace on 4 June – their mission; to help raise £220,000 for desperately needed research into motor neurone disease (MND) at Barts and The London School of Medicine.

Their inspiration is their long-time and much loved colleague Wayne Sammut, who was diagnosed with MND in 2009. Wayne is determined to support researchers at Barts who are seeking to investigate the role of muscle stem cells as a potential therapy for MND.

MND is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to deterioration of the upper and lower motor neurons, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity including speaking, walking, breathing, swallowing and general movement of the body. From the onset of symptoms, life expectancy typically ranges from six months to five years. MND affects over 5000 people in the UK each year.

In addition to the CVC Capital Partners team, Wayne has a group of friends running the Barts 10k race on 26 June in Victoria Park, London.

A spokesperson for Barts and The London Charity says "There are currently no effective treatments for MND, therefore there is a real clinical need to identify and develop new therapies to treat MND patients. Recent research undertaken by the team has identified muscle stem cells as a promising channel through which a therapy could be developed and the researchers desperately need funding to take this to the next stage."

If you would like to get involved in fundraising for this exciting research, please contact Hayley in the fundraising team on 020 7618 1722.
